Next up in my confusing tarot card exploration is that ever changing enigma in the sky, The Moon.
The Moon is a card of things that are not fully revealed yet. It is often associated with fear, illusion, deception, trauma and subconscious patterns. That sounds heavy...and it is! At the same time, it can represent intuition, imagination, dreams and revelations.
So what possibilities might The Moon bring up in a “what I need to let go of” position?
Uncertainty...Terrifying Uncertainty.
I recently drew The Moon for myself in this position and the uncertainty of it really put me on edge. As someone who can be a bit of a control freak, I prefer to know what is happening, where things are going and what I'm supposed to do next. The Moon offers very little certainty, which may be exactly why it makes me so uncomfortable.
Maybe this card is connected to the anxiety that appears when we cannot see the whole picture. When the facts are incomplete, it's tempting to fill in the gaps with assumptions based on old fears. We might find ourselves responding to a story in our minds rather than to what is actually happening.
Fear or Intuition, Which is it?
The Moon could also raise questions about the difference between fearing something and knowing something. Is a feeling connected to the present situation, or is an old memory, wound or pattern influencing the way we see it?
This card doesn't have to represent a choice between trusting every feeling and dismissing them all. It might instead invite a closer look at where those feelings come from. Its mystery leaves room for intuition, but also for projection, confusion and misunderstanding.
Cycles and Change.
Depending on the cards around it, The Moon could also be discussing change and cycles. Our view of the Moon is constantly shifting, from the darkness of the new moon to the luminous full moon. The Moon is still present throughout the cycle, even when it is not visible to us.
This could suggest that uncertainty is part of a changing process rather than proof that something has gone wrong. It might be necessary to allow our perspective to shift as more information appears.
A Bigger Question
As a Major Arcana card, The Moon may point towards a significant life lesson. In this position, it could be exploring my relationship with control, fear and the unknown.
Rather than offering an answer, The Moon seems to invite more questions (as the tarot often does). What am I imagining? What am I sensing? What am I afraid to discover? And what might become clearer if I allow the picture to change?
